5 Phrases That Can Help You in Your Salary Negotiation

5 Phrases That Can Help You in Your Salary Negotiation5 Phrases That Can Help You in Your Salary NegotiationIf you brought your A-game to your last interview and scored yourself an offer, congratulations Standing out from a sea of competitors enough to hear that coveted phrase Youre hired is nothing to take lightly. Now comes perhaps the even harder part- negotiating your salary. Playing your cards right during the hiring stage and getting your optimal salary will set you on the road for future financial success at each raise and promotion, as well as with how much you can put away into savingsand your retirement account. Here are a few tips to help you in your salary negotiation.Use the following smart keywords and phrases during your salary negotiationPhrase 1 Based on my researchIts important to show your potential new babo that youre willing to put the work behind asking for more money by researching exactly what you are owed. While it would be nice if we could all just make the sa lary we believe we deserve, what will really impress your boss is if youve taken the time to look up what otzu sich people in the same position and with the same education and years of experience make to prove your worth. Salary.com or PayScale.com are good places to start that research.Phrase 2 Is that number flexible? If your boss lobs a number at you during salary negotiations that you believe is unacceptable, rather than getting upset or flexing some serious anger muscle, remaincalm and askhow much flexibility shehas to work with that number. In this case youll be buying yourself a little time to recall the numbers you researched from Phrase 1 so that your next sentence will let your boss know exactly who shes dealing with- in other words, someone whos come prepared.Phrase 3 What salary range have you paid someone in the same position in the past?Potential new hires are often asked in interviews what they make at their current position, or what salary theyre expecting in their new role. Answering with a specific amount will only put all the power in your bosss hands, since only she knows how much they would have actually been willing to pay you had you not just named a number that was thousands lower.Instead, counter with a totally reasonable question back to them about how much people in this position have made in the past. Its also acceptable to ask for a more complete view of the overall package being offered to you(vacation days, retirement packages, health insurance options, etc.) before settling on a fair salary.Phrase 4 Im so excited for this opportunityThroughout the salary negotiation phase you may feel a bit awkward, but its important to keep reminding your would-be boss that you really are happy to have been given an offer, and youre willing to work with her to find a salary thats suitable for you both. You dont need to repeat it over and over, but to start the negotiation by saying that youre excited for the offer, and then perhaps repeating it on ce again while youre in the thick of things, will helpdiffuse any potential doubts your new employer might be having about your willingness to accept the position.Phrase 5 NothingIt might sound weird or tricky, but try not to fill the silences during your salary negotiations with constant chatter. If you do, before you know it, you may have talked yourself down from what you were originally asking for.Instead, sit with the small silences and try to let your boss be the first one to respond. You arent the only one feeling the pressure during a salary negotiation, and your boss will appreciate the effort youre putting in, which will probably make her more likely to decide in your favor.

How to Customize Your Resume

How to Customize Your Resume How to Customize Your Resume A couple of days ago, I described my frustration at the lack of personalized responses to my ad for a designer. Commenter Mose suggested that instead of just venting, I actually explain how to customize your resume. Good idea So Ive taken a resume I had on my desk (disguised of course) and were going to customize it to fit a specific job description. This job seeker is a business development executive who has been selling high tech equipment for the last 10 years. The equipment is sold to a number of different industries and organizations, including the military, manufacturing and health care. Here youll see that we focused on his technology expertise, his international experience and his ability to drive revenue gains all things which are backed up throughout his resume, but none of which tie him to just one industry. But now he has to actually use this resume to write to people in very specific industries, and they are looking for clues that he will be a good fit. Which means they need to see that he has the industry background and relevant experience to do a great job for them.Customizing Your Resume Step 1Examine the job description. Print it out and go through it looking for the key points. Dont just look at the qualifications list because recruiters dont always write everything theyre thinking. Look also at the responsibilities, because that will give you clues to key requirements. Here is parte of a job posting that I snagged from the web.Youll see that I have highlighted key points that we need to emphasize in the resume.Customize Your Resume Step 2Now look at your own resume and look for areas you can change in order to emphasize the key points you identified in the job description. For example, look back at Davids resume introduction. The job posting was titled Business Development Executive so I will remove the reference to sales in the title. I will also change the sub-header and the areas of e xpertise.Notice that they use the word consultative sales twice in the job posting. This is obviously very important to them and yet we havent used that term anywhere in the introduction. David does work this way, so we need to stress that fact. They are looking for someone to aggressively grow their business this suggests that strong, driving language will appeal to them.Looking further down his resume, I see that we can put more emphasis on the health care industry and minimize the focus on the other areas (military and manufacturing) because these just muddy the message.I also see that they use the word account penetration twice, which suggests they have issues in this area. David is very strong here, but we havent written about his successes using those words, so we will need to make that change.I will continue to go through the resume this way looking for any opportunity to highlight how David fits this position, but for the sake of this blog post, I hope this is enough for yo u to get the idea. Here is part of the revised resumeSee how much more appealing it is? Its hard to imagine a recruiter not wanting to interview David given how well he fits the job requirements. I continued to make changes throughout the resume to ensure that his suitability was clear. But one thing I didnt do and would never do is to lie. Sometimes, job postings will list skills you dont have thats OK. Just work on stressing what you can do without ever making up things that are untrue, because that will always come back to bite you. Some people think this kind of messaging is best left for the deckblatt letter, but honestly lots of people never even read cover letters, so you have to do it right in the resume.Making these kind of changes can be the difference between getting an interview and not, so take the time do it rightGood luck and if you need step-by-step help in writing your resume, check out The Blue Sky Guide to Resume Writing. In this downloadable eBook, I walk you t hrough the entire resume creation process from start to finish, just as I did in this blog post. Your resume will never be the same again

Robert Henry Thurston

Robert Henry Thurston Robert Henry Thurston Robert Henry ThurstonOne of the most well-known mechanical engineering professors and educators welches Robert Henry Thurston (1839 1903). Growing up in Providence, RI, he attended prep school in the early 1840s and worked in the machine shop at his fathers steam engine manufacturing company, the first of its kind in the United States. After graduating Brown University with a degree in philosophy and a certificate in engineering, he joined his fathers company for a short time. He volunteered to serve in the Navy Engineering Corps during the Civil War and taught after the war at Annapolis. Taking some time off from teaching, he visited England and wrote articles about iron forging practices there. The articles impressed his editor, the first president of Stevens Institute of Technology, who hired Thurston as a mechanical engineering professor which lead to his creation of a new educational model and curricula for engineers. At the time, eng ineering education welches very much a shop culture, where students with farm or mechanical skills learned how to make mechanical machines and components in wood shops, machine shops, and foundries. Thurston wrote articles about new models for engineering education based instead in science and mathematics, and published them widely. He presented his new curriculum to the U.S. State Department, visited Berlin for the 1873 Vienna Exposition where his articles were translated into German, and became the first ASME president in 1883 at age 41. Robert Henry Thurston excelled in steam engine technologies. In 1885 he submitted an entry for his educational models to the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition, and impressed the panel judge who was the president of Cornell University. He was hired and served 18 years as the first director of Cornells Sibley College. Thurston created a college of engineering where fewer shop hours were required, transforming engineering study into one with a clas sroom culture with more laboratory testing and scientific principle-based classroom time. Introducing the novel idea that students should build upon work done in the classroom by testing theories in laboratories, he established the first ever mechanical engineering laboratory, giving first-hand experience combined with applied engineering aspects. His ideas for engineering education were widely adopted at other universities after the 1900s. Gary Lee Downey, a technological historian, says in his 2007 History and Technology paper, Thurston was an intellectual and institutional visionary whose creative initiatives made him a strategic agent in the stabilization of engineering formation in schools. As a savvy architect and advocate of school culture, he became an interesting and important figure in the emergence of engineering education in the United States. Cornell University still has Thurston Avenue as well as a collection of Thurstons model steam engines, his patented autographic te sting machine, and viscosity-measuring instrument. The college of engineering still holds mechanical engineering courses in Thurston Hall and remembers him when traveling on Thurston Avenue on the campus. Thurston continued issuing publications, reports, and technical articles about steam engines, materials, and other topics, and was considered the countrys leading mechanical engineering educator at the time. Some say his greatest engineering accomplishment was providing the first English translation of the French Carnot Papers Reflections on the Motive Power of Heat, which established the Second Law of Thermodynamics, and made the papers accessible to audiences in the United States for the first time. Some still consider his translations the best available, providing a valuable link between international engineering and educational communities and the ASME. Debbie Sniderman is CEO of VI Ventures LLC, a technical consulting company.Introducing the novel idea that students should bui ld upon work done in the classroom by testing theories in laboratories, he established the first ever mechanical engineering laboratory, giving first-hand experience combined with applied engineering aspects.

How to Give More Powerful Positive Feedback

How to Give More Powerful Positive FeedbackHow to Give More Powerful Positive Feedback Contrary to popular belief, giving positive feedback to your direct reports isnt just about recognizing them and making them feel good. While those are important factors, theres a lot mora to it.Great managers get this. Instead of jumping in with a rote nice job or thanks, they take a few extra minutes to consider how to give praise in a way that will be truly useful . Maybe you highlight an element of someones work that veers away from a less productive habit, or help an insecure direct report see a strength he or she was unaware of, or inspire the whole gruppe to match someones proactive approach to solving a problem. Also keep in mind that powerful feedback needs to beAuthentic. People can tell when youre exaggerating or havesome ulterior motive in mind. If you dont genuinely believe someones behavior deserves recognition and has the impact you claim, then dont give the praise.Sp ecific. Describe the precise behavior you noticed so that recipients understand what theyve done and that you noticed it. And describe the impact of that behavior so that theyll understand why they should continue doing it. As youre preparing the feedback, think of the formula I noticed X, and the impact is Y.Individualized. A compliment thats highly motivating to one person may fall flat with another. As you choose your approach and words, draw from how your direct report has reacted in the past. Also, make a point of asking about motivations and goals in one-on-ones , setting yourself up to link positive feedback to what drives the person. What if you dont have enough of a foundation to customize your feedback when something praise-worthy happens? Try leading with a question before you give feedback (e.g., What do you think went best in the meeting you just facilitated? ), then calibrating your praise based on the persons answer (e.g., I agree - I love how we all walked away wi th clear action items thatwill help move the project forward more quickly ). For more on listening and responding, see 9 tips to listen like a leader .Below are just a few examples of how you couldgive effective reinforcing feedback to a direct report who has justdelivered an excellent presentation to colleagues. You can modifythese approaches to fityour direct reports accomplishment.Great job today. I noticed how youre applying the things weve been talking about in our one-on-ones Y our tone of voice was more authoritative, you used nontechnical language that the whole group could relate to and your message was much more clear and focused. When you compare your presentation today to the one you gave brde quarter, youve come a long way .Y our presentation today was so engaging. I especially liked how you spoke up clearly and made a point of making eye contact with each person in the room. I know youve said in the past that talking in front of groups makes you nervous, buttoday y ou came across as in command. It was a great example of your persistence and strength.I know you put a tremendous amount of work into todays presentation - not only with all the data you gathered from other departments, but also the hours you put in over the weekend. I appreciate the extraordinary effort. It shows your commitment and will go a long way to helping the team feel prepared when they talk to clients. Next time, lets figure out how we can save you some prep time.Great job today. The clear way you presented the process is going to help the team get up to speed quickly. Youve saved them probably a weeks worth of work, since now they dont have to dig around for their own answers. Theyll have your handy slides to use as reference.Great job today. The way you outlined the competitive landscape gave everyone important context theyll need to implement the new client strategy. It wasa big contribution toward our department goal this quarter. Keep thinking along these lines. You r presentation today really showed off your communication skills , especially the way you connected Mauras idea at the end to what Tobias had said earlier. I think pointing that out helped clarify next steps for everyone. Yourability to draw connections and package information like that is a real next-level leadership skill. You did an excellent job involving each member of the team in todays presentation. And you managed to do it without putting anyoneon the spot andmaking them feel uncomfortable. And your presenting next steps as questions really helped everyone feel like they were part of the process. Thats the kind of inclusion thatll help us work better as a team.Acknowledge the relative size of the accomplishmentYou did a great job ending your presentation on time today. That may seem like a small thing, but I could tell the group appreciated having that time for Q&A.Thank you for the amazing presentation today. When you take the kampagne to gather and present all that marke t research, it saves me a ton of time and is a huge help. And the way you explained it made me see connections between our process and business results in ways I hadnt before.Nice work today - you nailed it. The way you presented the process step by step was exactly what I had in mind when we talked through it in our planning meeting last week. I also liked how you included the client impact with each step - that really went above and beyond. This article was originally published on Jhana.com . Reprinted with permission.

Their international group came up with the idea of creating a robot to detect leaks in water pipes, explains Chatzigeorgiou, who joined MITs new team for the project. His group collaborates with engineers and students at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia (KFUPM), which sponsors and funds the project. No city in the world is free of water leaks reports Youcef Toumi. Some pipes may have leaks exceeding 40% of clean, processed water ready for consumer use! With increasing populations, new technologies are important for generating clean water and distributing it efficiently, he stresses. Undetected, water or gas leaks beneath city streets can cause danger to both residents and properties. Chatzigeorgious MS project involved identifying promising leak detection techniques for sensors. Old corrosive metal pipes are being replaced with cheaper, non-corrosive plastic. No current approach has worked well enough in small plastic pipes. Most detection systems are slow, inefficient, and costly. They use above-ground acoustic sensors to listen for faint sounds or vibrations caused by leaks. Swimming module of the water pipe leak detection system, a palm-sized autonomous underwater vehicle that will be deployed in city water distribution networks. Photo Courtesy of Mechatronics Research Lab, MIT The MIT-KFUPM leak-detection robot fits inside pipes as narrow as four inches in diameter. It detects leaks of one to two millimeters in length, with higher speed and accuracy than other techniques, by sensing pressure changes. We discovered that our system for detecting leaks in water pipes also detects gas leaks, says Chatzigeorgiou, now completing his PhD studies in Mechanical Engineering. He worked mainly on the wheeled robot for gas pipelines and on optimizing the detection system. You Wu, MS student in mechanical engineering, concentrated on a swimming robot for water pipes. These autonomous robots move around, do inspections, and collect and report the data, all from inside the pipes, notes Youcef Toumi. An intelligent machine doing maneuvers in complex pipe networks combines mechanical and electrical engineering skills. The required motion planning and execution use different types of sensing to perform efficiently. Mechanical engineers provide computational fluid dynamics; system modeling including electronics; the wireless communication systems; and control and estimation algorithms and their implementation. Instrumentation involves actuators, sensors, and an on-board computing platform that controls the robot and does detection Developing the two prototypes, which work well at the lab level, required 13 or 14 versions. The cost for the two prototypes was $1,000 in parts and production, reports Chatzigeorgiou. Several gas and water companies have visited the lab to see the robot and explore potential future collaboration. The technology needs further development and testing outside the lab. The next step is evaluating the prototypes effectiveness in a gas companys certified testing facility for leak detection. Were optimistic about the results of these tests I think the robot will generate a lot of industry attention. We hope to keep moving towards commercializing or licensing the technology. Several patents have already been issued; more are expected. Chatzigeorgiou, lead author on articles published in four engineering journals, has visited KFUPMs team annually since 2010. At several international conferences about water systems, hes presented the leak detecting robot. Everyones excited about our technology, and that maybe our product can fill the current need. Side view of a Carrier Prototype. Photo Courtesy of Mechatronics Research Lab, MIT Robotics is very exciting, and a bit unique, says Dr. Chris Jones, director of Strategic Technology Development at iRobot Corporation in Bedford, MA. Mechanical, electrical and software engineers must work together throughout the product development process to elegantly solve engineering challenges. The best robot designers possess an in-depth knowledge in one engineering field, but have a working knowledge across all of them. Its important that an engineer has a good understanding of all the parts of a machine artificial intelligence, sensors and action and how they work together. Robotics has become an even more exciting area of research and development, integrating many disciplines, including mechanical engineering, controls, and instrumentation, agrees Youcef Toumi. Its a great way for young engineers to learn and practice engineering! By applying your skills to problems that matter to people whether its aging infrastructure, self-driving cars, or robot helpers for the elderly you can help provide real solutions for mankind.

The Benefits of an Entry-Level Position

The Benefits of an Entry-Level Position The Benefits of an Entry-Level Position An entry-level job is one that allows an individual to enter the workforce, often with little experience or education. These positions are sought after by students right out of school and older workers seeking a new direction in their careers. Over time, employees will learn the ins and outs of the business, gain valuable experience, and earn the potential for better-paying and higher-ranking positions. It is, essentially, a way to get a foot in the door. What Is an Entry-Level job? At their most basic, entry-level jobs allow an employee to gain experience while getting paid. These jobs help the company accomplish necessary work that more experienced individuals don̢۪t want to do on a daily basis. The job requirements for these positions are designed for an individual who is in the learning stage of his career. For a person with a high school diploma, an entry-level job may be hands-on, such as a store clerk, waitperson, factory worker, or healthcare assistant. For college graduates, these are frequently white-collar jobs. They require that the individual has knowledge in the field, a degree, or the skills honed in college to help them learn on-the-job. Positions like these are often paid a lower wage than more experienced or skilled workers. By having lower-paid employees do basic jobs, a company can get the highest rate of return from its senior staff. Employers Benefit From Entry-level Positions Companies can see significant benefits from using entry-level employees in each department. These jobs help the business accomplish basic tasks that must be done without utilizing or stretching the skills and experience of more seasoned employees. The employees can be trained in the skills necessary to advance in their career field and at the company. This process gives employers a steady stream of employees who are willing to learn and ready for promotion to the next level of responsibility. Another advantage of an entry-level job is that the employer can mold the individual as an employee. The employer can encourage the development of skills specifically needed by the company while helping the employee develop work habits and ways of interacting that fit the culture of the workplace. Employees Benefit from Entry-level Positions Whether employees are starting or changing their career, entry-level jobs are a win for them as well. It is a perfect way for workers to gain experience in a new field and learn the day-to-day workings of a company and industry. Everyone has to start somewhere, and these positions are often the first step to a long and rewarding career. The opportunity for advancement within the company is also an advantage for workers. Quite often, employers prefer to hire from within their company as positions open up. An assistant or laborer with a good work ethic may be a hiring managers first choice when a mid-level employee moves on because they can skip most of the training required for that persons replacement.

6 of the Most Captivating Cover Letter Openers ( Why They Work)

6 of the Most Captivating Cover Letter Openers ( Why They Work) 6 of the Most Captivating Cover Letter Openers ( Why They Work) Let’s cut straight to the chase: most cover letters are bad. In fact, Dawn Rasmussen, certified resume writer and president of Pathfinder Writing and Career Services , happily admits that “I love writing cover letter openings because I know how bad they usually are.” But that doesn’t mean your cover letter is destined for the slush pile. By starting with what Rasmussen calls a hook, you can snag a hiring manager’s attention - and even a new job. “The best openings - otherwise known as a hook - are attention-getters,” Rasmussen says. “Hooks are similar to headlines you see online that tempt you to click and find out more.” How can you write a hook? You can open with a compelling quote, tell a story, use humor and much more. Here are six cover letter strategies you can use - plus examples you can emulate - along with the reasons why they work so well, so that you can get to writing. “It is the spirit and not the form of law that keeps justice alive.”  -  Earl Warren As a public defender, my job is to keep justice alive, and I do this by relentlessly pursuing avenues to ensure that this is carried through for the people that I represent. According to Rasmussen, this opening works really well because “it specifically addresses the underlying motivators that encompass both law [the candidate’s chosen industry] and the driving force for justice, which fits right along the lines of what a public defender does.” I knew that I was destined for greatness when I was slimed on Nickelodeon. Nothing like being covered in green goo to help you realize your potential. “How does this apply to the open internship at Airbnb ?” you may be wondering. Because I am collaborative, creative and tenacious enough to get a bunch of smelly slime dumped on me and still keep smiling. Lindsay Mustain, Talent Paradigm ‘s vice president of business development and job coach, says that starting a letter in a way that piques curiosity is “considered a pattern interrupt. It’s silly and interesting. It’s enough for someone to stop and get a little bit of attention and keep your audience interested in your story. Make sure it’s something interesting to read.” According to a recent article in the Portland Business Journal, “ABC Corporation just signed a new lease on a 100,000-square-foot office park.” Because [your company] is making the news with such a large new office space addition, growth is in your immediate future. It is clear that your company is adding headcount, so having a sales team that can scale revenues accordingly is critical to your continued success. And that’s where I come in. Accelerating revenues is a hallmark of my career, and since my background is in the same sector, I see a great deal of opportunity to help expand your company’s footprint in the marketplace and enhance the bottom line with new sales. “Holding a mirror back up to the employer so they can see themselves in the news is a great attention-getter ,” says Rasmussen. “But it also shows critical thinking skills - tying together that a new lease means more people and more money needed to keep operations afloat.” When Flight 1549 touched down into the cold, dark waters of the Hudson River on January 15, 2009, as a passenger, I thought my life was over. Seeing the professionalism and calmness of the entire flight crew was something to which I immediately connected. I had thought about becoming a flight attendant in the past, but something clicked in that moment - and I realized that my desire to serve in this capacity was actually being born in that moment. There’s a “wow factor” when you tell a story in the opening of your cover letter, Rasmussen explains. “It grabs your attention, and makes you think, ‘Here’s someone who had something major happen to them. I should read on.’” It also shows off your personality, too. When I heard Elon Musk’s quote, “when something is important enough, you do it even if the odds are not in your favor,” I knew I needed to tell you about the passion I have around the vision that Tesla has for infinitely scalable clean energy. I’ve been dreaming of a career with Tesla since I was in college and the Tesla Roadster became available. Fact: businesses want to hire people who are passionate about their industry and company . So, show that passion, Mustain encourages. “You know the business, you know the founder, you know the mission,” she says. “You are a raving fan and educated about the company. You start with why you believe in them,” and then take the letter from there. Congratulations! You have just reached the last résumé you’ll need to read to fill the open operations manager position. So relax, put your feet up and read on to find out how I can help your company reach its productivity, cost management and efficiency goals. This cover letter opener is gutsy, but that’s the point, Rasmussen says. “The candidate is literally going directly to the key pain points of what the employer needs,” she points out, “but in an upbeat way without being too snarky.”

For Fast-Growing Companies, Infrastructure Is the Word

For Fast-Growing Companies, Infrastructure Is the Word For Fast-Growing Companies, Infrastructure Is the Word Fast-growing companies must assess whether they have strong infrastructure in place  to  support not only current business  needs, but also future expansion. That’s the core message from a recent webinar, “Scaling for Organizational Growth: Make or Break Decisions,” from Protiviti and global technology computer corporation, Oracle. “Sometimes, companies are growing so fast that they fall behind,” said Jeff Henley, executive vice chairman of Oracle, who was interviewed during the webinar by Protiviti managing director Steve Hobbs. “People can lose their way if they don’t scale up their infrastructure - not just technology, but controls, processes, the management team. … You need to focus on everything.” Also on the panel was Tyler Chapman, director of finance and accounting for Lumosity, an online brain-training and neuroscience research company. Chapman explained that Lumosity’s management team recently came to the realization that the company needed to take its support functions - particularly, the finance function - to the next level if it was going to handle future growth. “We have two key decisions we’re working through right now,” he said. “One is, ‘What is the ideal timing to invest in the finance organization?’ It’s not just about bringing it up to speed, but investing ahead of growth, essentially. … And how do we do it? How do we build it out?’” Make a plan and leverage technology Chapman said the first step for Lumosity was to develop a formal plan to determine what investments should be made in systems, people and processes to make the finance function scalable. One decision for the company was to move the finance function to a cloud-based enterprise resource planning (ERP) system from Oracle, which will soon go live, according to Chapman. Henley noted that cloud-based solutions are making it easier for fast-growing companies like Lumosity to revamp and modernize all of their functions - from finance to sales and marketing to human resources - relatively quickly and inexpensively. He emphasized that companies looking to the cloud as they expand should consider a wide range of factors when selecting vendors and solutions - from the functionality and scalability of applications to security and privacy to corporate governance issues. All of these things will become only more important to the company’s ability to operate optimally as the business grows. Learn more To access the recording of the webinar, “Scaling for Organizational Growth: Make or Break Decisions,” visit Protiviti.com/webinars. You’ll learn more about why fast-growing companies should: View infrastructure as an integral part of the business - and not an afterthought. Consider moving to the cloud to help support growth and to access new technology innovations faster and more cost-effectively. Prioritize action items and investments, and develop a realistic plan and timeline to achieve those goals. How to make $500,000 a year and have no savings

How to make $500,000 a year and have no savings How to make $500,000 a year and have no savings A paradox of being a white-collar, high-earning professional: as your salary grows, so do your needs. Childcare, mortgages, car payments. Pretty soon, it’s easy to become subject to lifestyle inflation: instead of the office coffee, you prefer the artisanal cold brew; instead of the discount airline, you splash out on business-class seats. The cramped old apartment gives way to a sprawling house, and instead of the old car, you have a new Land Cruiser; and the kids take every kind of lesson. All of this feels like living within your means, because $500,000 is a lot of money by anyone’s count. But by the end of the month, much less the year, it becomes easy to be left with nearly nothing.Personal-finance blogger The Financial Samurai delved into this question with a look at several families who have $500,000 a year in gross income. (Spoiler alert: he uses the breakdown to pitch his own financial planning services). His breakdown explains why even high-earning Americans back themselv es into living paycheck-to-paycheck - imitating 76% of the country, where people make a fraction of six-figure salaries. Here’s the most striking chart, as shared by Josh Brown, the CEO of Ritholtz Wealth Management. These are the expenses  for a family that lives in New York City, where housing costs are among the highest in the country. (For instance, this couple paid $1.5 million for an apartment that is only 1,700 square feet - large square footage for the city, but relatively small compared to houses at that price in the rest of the country.)As you can see, the couple is saving barely anything; they’re maxing out their 401(k) contributions, but they’re very short on ready cash. What can we draw from that? It’s tempting to judge how this couple decides to live, with what some might dismiss as #firstworldproblems: the expensive house, three vacations a year and luxury cars led one commenter on Twitter to say, “there’s so much fluff in this budget it’s ridiculous. Th is couple is choosing everything but saving.”That’s absolutely true: looking at your budget, cold-eyed, shows your priorities, and this couple does not consider saving a priority.  As the Financial Samurai puts it, “the couple will need to work for 93 more years given their savings rate is so low.”That said, it’s rare for others to do better, regardless of income. Two economists, Emmanuel Saez and Gabriel Zucman, found recently that the top 10% to 1% of income earners in the U.S. save only 12% of their (large) incomes. The bottom 90% of earners, the economists found, barely scrape together under 5% of their incomes in savings. Most Americans have no emergency savings at all, across a range of incomes. There are many factors for that, including stagnant wages for the middle class; “the American middle class hasn’t had a raise in 15 years,” noted 538.com. There is also rising student-loan debt, which has ballooned to $1.2 trillion; and rising costs including housing and more expensive consumer goods.Still, it’s pretty chilling to see how easy it is to feel like you’re living within your means when in fact, your large income is a high-wire act: carrying you from year to year, but if you lose your job or face unexpected expenses, it all gives way pretty quickly. What that means: if you’re earning a lot but blowing all your money now, you will be tethered to your job and your paycheck, and you won’t be able to make the career choices you want. So, before your next salary negotiation, make sure you’re not wasting your money first.

What to do when your career feels like Groundhog Day

What to do when your career feels like Groundhog Day What to do when your career feels like Groundhog Day The time of year when a small animal pops its head out from under the ground to look for his shadow â€" Groundhog Day. Have you heard of it? We don’t mark the occasion in the UK, but the phrase is widely used. According to the Collins English Dictionary, ‘Groundhog Day’ refers to a situation in which events are, or appear to be, continually repeated. It’s a phrase that hit the headlines in January when Theresa May was mocked by the opposition for dragging MPs into Brexit ‘Groundhog Day’ â€" when her proposed plan B for leaving the EU was accused of being almost identical to the original.Outside of politics, the term is most commonly used for those times when life doesn’t seem to be moving forwards but, rather, playing on repeat like a broken record. Used to describe that uninspired, trapped feeling that most of us will have experienced at some point in our lives, career advisors are all too familiar with job seekers who identify with this American event. If you are going through your own personal Groundhog Day (or even week, month, or year) when it comes to your career, you really should take action. Perhaps you can’t decide whether you’re simply moving along at a comfortable, normal pace for someone in your position or are, indeed, stuck in a rut as you fear. Below are some surefire ways to tell if your career is stalling and help you to decide whether it’s time to move onto pastures new.Motivation seems hard to findDo you feel as though your job has become routine and it’s difficult to keep yourself motivated?Day-to-day tasks may have started to feel mundane â€" like you could do them with your eyes closed. The problem is, when motivation declines, so does your professional edge. When this happens, you aren’t using your full skill set anymore and will likely have already stalled. To improve things, you could investigate whether there are opportunities to change your job within your current organization. Could you transfer to another depar tment or take on an exciting new project? Switching things up like this could be just the motivational injection you need. If this isn’t an option for you or the organization you work for, then it may be time to freshen your CV and seek new job opportunities elsewhere. There are no opportunities for growthIf you’re no longer learning new things, you’re no longer growing in your career. If you haven’t learned new skills at your job in a long time, it’s time to re-evaluate your current situation. Ask yourself whether the senior management team is truly investing in you and your future. Have opportunities for further training ever been discussed? What about opportunities for promotion? Training workshops, industry seminars, and sit-down conversations about your personal development are all essential to your career growth.Managers aren’t mind readers, however, so it is always worth giving them a chance to rectify this situation by explaining how you feel and suggesting ways t hat could improve things for you. But if you haven’t previously received much support for learning, and can’t see anything on the horizon after having this conversation with your boss, then you’ve most likely become stagnant and it’s time to move on.You’ve lost your voiceWhether you no longer have anything to say to your colleagues, or have stopped putting up your hand in team discussions, a lack of communication is always a bad sign. Perhaps you feel as though you’ve said everything you can in previous meetings and you’re just going over old ground, or maybe you have simply run out of energy to chit chat with Joe from accounts on your tea break.Equally, if you feel that colleagues have stopped speaking to you, ask yourself why this might be. Has the perception of your role changed, or are you less instrumental in the business? Are you less friendly than you used to be? Maybe your colleagues are also suitably tired of chit chat! Whichever is true for you, when you stop speaking to your colleagues, it can be an indicator of a job where you no longer feel it’s going anywhere. This certainly isn’t a place you’ll thrive. You no longer get praised for your workCan you remember the last time your boss praised you on a job well done? Perhaps your boss has never been the type to say ‘thank you’ or ‘well done’ much, but if they used to give you this sort of feedback, it might be time to rethink your position. This could be due to a lack of motivation and enthusiasm on your part, or complacency on that of your boss’.If you can pin down this problem to a lack of motivation, perhaps you could address those issues to solve this one. Only you will know in your heart whether this problem can be improved by speaking to your manager. If any of these telltale signs ring true for you, and you feel that your career has become more like Groundhog Day than you’d want, now is the time to act before you find yourself still there in 10 years’ time. Asse ss your experience, skills, and desires, and start looking for a new job today. This article was originally published on Your Coffee Break.
