2010 Planning Reviewing Last Year And Looking To Improve Next Year

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers 2010 Planning: Reviewing Last Year and Looking to Improve Next Year I am continuing to post ideas lawyers I coach are using to prepare their 2010 plan. Jodi McDougall, a partner with Cozen O’Connor in their Seattle, office recently shared her approach with me: I’m planning for next year by first reviewing this past year. I’m going through my goals from last year and seeing what I’ve achieved as well as what I didn’t. For those goals I achieved, I give myself a pat on the back, or better yet a few hours at the spa. I also look around me and see those who helped me to achieve my goals. For example, my parents who are always there to step in and love my kids when my husband and I accidentally schedule a deposition the same day. I express my thanks through a note, a kind gesture or a gift. I let them know that I recognize their contributions to my success. I also look to last year’s achievements and determine what I want to do again and how to improve on those goals. For example, with two small children I had stopped taking time for exercise, thinking I didn’t have time for such luxuries. Cordell reminded me that successful people take good care of themselves. Last year, I ran a half marathon in June. This year my goal is to run at least two half marathons. I’m already signed up for one! For those goals I didn’t reach, I try to figure out why I fell short and either set the goal again or adjust it to make it more reasonable and achievable. I remind myself of how good it feels to achieve the goals I set and give myself a fresh start and let go of my past shortcoming. Finally, I will take some time at the end of the year to relax and enjoy my family. I recharge my batteries so that I will be ready to go when January 1, 2010 rolls around.   I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Welcome back to the smaller than usual guide on making a lifelong change! In Part I of this arrangement, we mapped out three basic strides for making a lifelong change. On the off chance that you've tracked, so far you have: Recognized what you have lost (or are going to lose); Isolated the bundle (all the outside points of interest of your past employments) from the blessing (the exercises, motivations, and aptitudes that will serve you for an amazing remainder); and, Made a motivating rundown of conceivable new openings, vocation ways, and expert jobs. My test to you was to keep your rundown of vocation change thoughts open-finished, and not to stress over creation it sensible or legitimate. We will start by just taking a gander at these energizing prospects somewhat nearer to see which ones warrant a full examination. Stage 1: Can you envision yourself in this activity job? Go down your rundown, and attempt to envision yourself in every one of the jobs that you recorded. You will probably dispose of the alternatives for a difference in profession that you don't see yourself focusing on. For instance: Jeff was a lawyer with a flourishing separation practice. He began to scan for another vocation after he understood that, regardless of how hard he worked, his customers never left genuinely glad. Less hopeless and with a liberating sensation truly, however distraught. Something he was planning to do in his next vocation was to make individuals grin. When Jeff created his rundown of conceivable outcomes, it happened to him that it may be enjoyable to be a comedian at youngsters' gatherings. Upon further reflection, Jeff understood that he was unable to envision himself really doing that, so he dispensed with it from his rundown. Related:What to Do When Your New Job Isn't Your Dream Job Stage 2: Choose your best three professions for a profound plunge. Since we are working with a shorter rundown, let us pick the initial three potential profession change thoughts you might want to investigate. You are associated with several individuals through your own and expert systems. Regardless of whether you don't actually know somebody who works in the field that interests you, somebody in your system may! Ask and you will get, yet be explicit when you inquire. When requested to think about what her standards for satisfaction is, Laurel returned with this rundown: Investing energy sustaining family and companion associations; Meeting new individuals; Making individuals grin; and, Investing energy in lovely spaces. While her up and coming advancement to administrator appeared to fit in the customary feeling of excelling, the CPA work implied that she worked extended periods of time, invested more energy with her PC than with individuals, and was stuck in the workplace for 12 hours one after another. Subsequent to making a rundown of potential outcomes, Laurel got amped up for investigating the profession change thought of turning into a realtor. Adaptable hours, meeting new individuals consistently, playing intermediary with homes, and facilitating open houses all lined up with her standards for bliss consummately. With that lucidity, the prerequisite to read for a permit didn't appear to be so overwhelming. With the difference in vocations, Laurel has since fabricated a significant after as a realtor, with the greater part of her business originating from referrals. Writing a Resume For Industry PhDs

Writing a Resume For Industry PhD'sThe basics of writing a resume for industry PhD's is quite similar to writing a resume for any other field. That being said, it can help you get a better position and better pay by putting more of your talents on display.Remember the earlier theory - 'if you are good enough, you are worthy'. This applies to applying for jobs in industry PhD programs as well. As was mentioned earlier, this is your opportunity to prove to them that you should be hired over somebody else who is not 'as good' or does not have your talent. It's about the future, but in a sense it's about proving yourself to get the career in hand.Of course, the resume is a document that should reflect what you have done in your previous job. It is always a good idea to go back and check out the job you were doing and what skills you demonstrated. If they say you were excellent at your job, include it in your resume. You may want to do an in-depth background check on the company you're app lying to. By doing a background check, you can find out about what skills they are looking for, what their job requirements are, what their leadership skills are, and so on. You can then include those skills and qualities that you can bring to the company that will make you a better candidate for the job.The resume for industry PhD programs should also show your achievements, and not just the current ones. Your achievements before and after the program will help you show that you've improved yourself. This way you will show your future employer that you have what it takes to succeed.Another tip that I will give you when it comes to writing a resume for industry PhD programs is that you should have an in-depth background check done on your background. You can learn about how well your friends and family are doing in their careers through this method. By showing your 'friends' your accomplishments that you can show in your resume, you show your future employer that you are someone who will be hardworking, determined, and really put forth the effort that it takes to get the job done.Another way to show your hard work is to add your hobbies, extracurricular activities, clubs, sports, volunteer work, and activities. Do not limit yourself to just list them here, as you want to make sure you include all of them. It doesn't even have to be in black and white, you can describe them in words.A resume for industry PhD programs is not going to be complete without a strong portfolio. Provide a few samples of your work and experiences, like sample chapters of reports and papers, samples of sales letters, sample curriculum vitae, and so on.

What are DOT Hazmat Training Requirements

What are DOT Hazmat Training Requirements What are DOT Hazmat Training Requirements? Have you been hired by a company that works with hazardous materials? If so, you may be required to complete the Department of Transportation’s HAZMAT training in order to comply with government regulations.   Below we will explain what DOT HAZMAT training is, who needs it, and what you can expect to learn after completing your course. Let’s jump in! What is DOT HAZMAT Training?   Because of the potential dangers that come with hazardous materials, the Department of Transportation created the US DOT Hazardous Materials Regulations (49 CFR) to provide safety guidelines for shipping hazardous materials. The United States government requires anyone who works directly with, or in close proximity to HAZMAT complete a safety training course that explains the safety guidelines outlined in 49 CFR.   DOT HAZMAT rules are strict, and there are major non-compliance penalties, so it’s essential that all relevant employees take a DOT HAZMAT training course.   Who Needs DOT HAZMAT Training?   Anyone who is involved, whether directly or indirectly, with the processing of hazardous materials needs to complete DOT HAZMAT training. Examples of employees that need to complete training is anyone who:   Purchases packaging or determines if it’s up to par for packing hazardous materials Prepares the shipment for sending, including those who box and label the package Fills out the appropriate shipping paperwork Signs off on manifests or paperwork Loads, unloads, or handles hazardous waste shipments Sells, tests, reconditions, or repairs HAZMAT packaging Screens hazardous cargo   Transports hazardous shipments or drives a vehicle transporting HAZMAT Accepts, transfers or unloads hazardous cargo Trains or supervises any of the above personnel Hasn’t been certified in HAZMAT regulations within the past three years What’s Included in DOT HAZMAT Training HAZMAT employees need to be trained on all Hazardous Materials Regulations that apply to the functions they perform. DOT HAZMAT training will include: general awareness training, function-specific training, safety training, security awareness training, and in-depth security training.   #1 General Awareness Training As the name suggests, General Awareness Training covers the basics of hazardous materials shipping and handling. Students will learn how to identify and recognize hazards before they move onto function-specific training. In this module, HAZMAT employees will also learn of one of the most important aspects of DOT HAZMAT trainingâ€"the Hazardous Materials Table.   DOT’s Hazardous Materials Table The Hazardous Materials Table is found at 49 CFR 172.101 and is typically introduced in the general awareness portion of DOT HAZMAT training. It identifies over 3,000 of the most commonly transported hazardous materials and lists them alphabetically by their proper shipping name.   The HAZMAT table explains all information necessary to complete shipping papers, mark and label the package, select appropriate placarding and comply with other regulations. The table is divided into ten major column headings. The first five columns in the table give a basic description of the materials, while the second five columns provide more specific information regarding the packaging, marking and labeling of the packages.   #2 HAZMAT Function Training Once the student has been introduced to the basics of HAZMAT, they will need to complete training that’s specific to their role when working with hazardous materials. For example, an employee who prepares shipping papers will be taking a different function training course than the truck driver who loads and unloads HAZMAT.   #3 Safety Training Hazardous materials are not safeâ€"that’s why their name literally includes the word “hazardous”. As such, HAZMAT employees must complete a training module on safety best practices when working with hazardous materials. This training will be tailored to the specific hazard that the company works with and will include information on how to safely handle HAZMAT, procedures for avoiding accidents and how to respond to an emergency situation.   #4 Security Awareness Training This training module was added to the HAZMAT training course after 9/11 and covers the security risks that are associated with hazardous materials. Topics covered include: vehicle security, how to keep employees safe and how to recognize potential security threats. This course is an introductory security course that’s used to prepare students for their In-Depth Security Training.   #5 In-Depth Security Training The last module of HAZMAT training is tailored to each company’s specific security plan. In this article I will furnish you with some valuable tips on the most proficient method to breeze through train driver assessments that structure some portion of the learner train driver choice procedure. In the first place, let us investigate the kinds of test you might be required to attempt during the train driver evaluation test: GROUP BOURDON TESTING This test can be generally difficult to pass, just on the grounds that it requires a serious time of fixation related to a capacity to work quickly yet precisely. The test itself comprise of five screens or pieces of paper which contains 25 sections of 'gatherings' of dabs (see picture beneath). The spots are bunched together in little gatherings of 2, 3, 4, 5, or 6. It is your undertaking to move over the screen or sheet of paper identify ing all of the 4 speck bunches on the screen. The trouble with this test is that after a brief timeframe it gets more diligently to distinguish the bunches which incorporate only 4 dabs, basically on the grounds that they all appear to be identical: GROUP BOURDON TEST EXAMPLE You can see from the above screen that it is very troublesome to concentration on it for a drawn out timeframe without the spots all congealing into one mass! A significant actuality to call attention to at this beginning period of the article is that you are not expected to finish the whole sheet or screen. Truth be told, you just have two minutes on each screen. The way to finishing the gathering bourdon fixation assessment is to truly concentrate on speed and exactness. The issue for you, as an expected competitor, is that you will lose marks for inaccurate answers. Numerous individuals have asked me what the pass mark is; the straightforward answer is I don't have a clue and I don't know any other person th at knows either! While getting ready for the test make certain to rehearse an online gathering bourdon testing instrument like the one HERE.THE ATAVTThe ATAVT test includes you being given a progression of pictures that just show up for a short duration. After each picture you will be asked to answer an inquiry on what the picture contained. An significant hint to recollect is that you will consistently hear a tone before the picture is going to be appeared â€" when you hear this be 100% centered around the screen!Below is an example question on what the ATAVT may introduce you. This inquiry depends on a traffic situation. Ensure you take a gander at the picture and recollect in the real test it will just show up onscreen for a brief time of time.SAMPLE QUESTIONTypically this picture will just show up for 1 second.Make sure you take a gander at everything about the picture â€" what vehicles are there? What shading right? Are there any people on foot? Etc.Once the picture has been give n you will at that point need to respond to an inquiry. This inquiry is various decision and can here and there have more than one right answer. For instance, the beneath question depends on the picture above:Question: what number dark vehicles were there in the picture? Your precision and speed are the two most significant components that you should recall in this test. An extraordinary practice tip is to take a gander at pictures for 1 second and afterward spread the image up with a bit of paper. What amount would you be able to recall from the image? There are, obviously, various tests that are utilized during the determination procedure however the over two components are very hard to pass. I would suggest getting ready for these in the development to the evaluation. The issue with the train driver tests is that you just have two endeavors to pass them. In the event that you bomb the test completely twice, at that point you will always be unable to apply once more. That is the r eason it is so essential to focus on getting ready completely for the tests. For those individuals who need to get a 'finish' for the train driver tests before they really apply to turn into a train driver, you can do this by paying to sit the tests with an external test manager organization. A case of an organization that runs the test is called DB Schenker and you can sit the test for around £165. Finally, good karma with your tests! Graduate schemes not for you Looking for something different University of Manchester Careers Blog

Graduate schemes not for you Looking for something different Those of you looking at internships and graduate schemes last semester will have noticed that there were a lot of big names recruiting.  Some of you may have found this off-putting. Big corporates and graduate schemes are not for everyone. In fact most people wont join a graduate scheme, they will find other entry routes into their first job after graduation and probably wont be working for one of the large companies that you see all over campus. Large organisations who recruit hundreds of graduates need to start their recruitment processes really early, some even start in summer.   Its simply a matter of processing all those applications and getting people through the interview and selection process in a timely manner so that the organisation can put its business processes in place for the year ahead. Smaller organisations or those with smaller entry numbers often recruit later, or as and when the need occurs, so if you havent found a graduate job or internship for next year do not despair. As a bit of a contrast this semester we will be taking a look at some of the options in the not for profit and public sector, as well as some of the other careers where a graduate scheme is not necessarily the route in. We will also be reminding you about options like: MGIP ( Manchester Graduate Internship Programe) 2013 entry opens end of January. Getting work experience through volunteering and internships.   Including the Volunteer for Your Career event 11-15 Feb. (More details coming soon) Events for budding entrepreneurs and those wanting to start their own business. Plus much more. Next up, the first of our blogs about working in the not for profit sector. How to Write a Resume

How to Write a ResumeWhen it comes to writing a resume, one of the first things that you need to do is choose which type of resume to use. There are a lot of options out there for resume writing that you need to research and decide which one is right for you. Here are some of the more popular resume formats and what they do for you.The first step in choosing the appropriate format for your resume is choosing what you want to put on it. Do you want to put it on your own or would you prefer to use a resume writer? Resume writers can be costly, but it is a good idea to get a professional resume writer because they are able to eliminate certain mistakes that the average person could make when writing their own resume. There are actually many different formats out there and just like how there are dozens of different types of shoes, the format that is appropriate for you depends on what your career is. If you have a few different career choices you should not be limited to a specific forma t. On the other hand, if you do not have many career choices and are only working toward a particular career path then you should be more limited with the format that you use. When using a professional resume writer you should try to write a resume that is easy to read and to write. When writing a resume you do not want to be hard to read and you do not want to be too difficult to write because these two traits will hold back your resume from being effective. The most common mistake that people make when trying to write a resume is that they try to cram a lot of information into it that does not fit together well.Remember that a resume is meant to help you get a job. You do not want to have a resume that is filled with information that you do not want to be on it and you do not want to have to deal with it later down the road. If you take your time when putting together your resume to make sure that it is as good as it can be and you get it in as few pages as possible. When you are lo oking for an answer to the question of how to write a resume you should consider first of all your audience. If you are writing for a job interview then you should be able to make a brief statement about yourself and your work history and present it in a way that clearly shows what you have accomplished. If you are writing for an employer, it is always important to show them how your experience matches up to their goals and also present your employer in a positive light.Another question that people ask when asking how to write a resume is the format for their cover letter. Many people do not realize that the cover letter that is written is really just a formality. Even though the cover letter is not really a section of the resume, it is still important to include it. You should make sure that you are careful about what you write in the cover letter and that you add your best effort to get them to hire you over other candidates. There are many questions that people ask when looking at how to write a resume. One of the most important things that you need to remember is that when you are writing your resume, you should choose a format that fits you best. You should never be limited to a particular format and the resume you write should be something that will serve you for a lifetime.

How to Stay Productive When Youre Working from Home

How to Stay Productive When Youre Working from Home Working from home is a perk that many companies have been allowing their employees to embrace. Often employees feel more productive and produce high quality work as they dont feel the restraints that they may feel in the workplace. Working from home has seen very good results for lots of companies, but  its very easy to get side-tracked and before you know it, youve watched the entire first season of Orange is the New Black. So how do you combat the working-from-home-lull? Read my top tips on how to remain productive whilst working from home: 1) Treat it exactly the same as a normal day at work: A mistake that people often make when working from home is changing up their schedule. In reality, you should aim to begin work at 9am (or whatever your usual starting time is) and finish at the time you usually would in the office. This gives at least a bit of structure to your day and also sets a limit to the time you should stop working. 2) Wear normal clothes: I think weve all dreamed of wearing our pyjamas into work on a rainy Monday morning, so having a full day of working from home  seems like the best thing in the world! But just because youre at home, doesnt mean you can throw on your sloppiest tracksuit bottoms and scraggy t-shirt. Instead you should wear actual clothes. This will keep you productive and you wont be as inclined to relax on the sofa like you were wearing your comfy clothes. Remember the saying Dress to Impress! 3) Turn Facebook off: This one is pretty obvious, but turn off Facebook! It can ruin productivity, especially if youre at home all day. 4) Plan your day: Working from home definitely allows a lot more flexibility in your day then working in an office. This is a one of the positives of working from home! Despite this, its always important to keep some kind of plan and to stick with it. 5)  Do allow some flexibility: Working from home is ideal if you have a busy lifestyle. Embrace all the positives of working from home by going to the gym, having a wander in the park or walking the dogs. Dont make yourself feel like you have to be at home all day everyday. The modern working day allows for flexibility and this will naturally increase your productivity and the quality of the work you do.6) Turn notifications off social media: Ive already mentioned staying away from Facebook.  But really you should limit all social media use throughout your working day. An easy way to do this is to turn off push notifications on your mobile phone from any app that isnt to do with your work. This way you wont be constantly distracted by a bleeping phone or laptop. Simple! 7) Listen to music: Its been proven that listening to music improves productivity in the workplace. Being at home means you can listen to whatever you like, whenever you want! You can even bust a move without anyone even seeing you. If thats not reason alone to work from home I dont know what is. 8) Keep yourself organised: Theres nothing worse than having a messy workplace or untidy schedule. Make sure you keep your desk free from clutter clear workspace, clear mind! The same can be said for your desk at work it can work wonders for your productivity as it makes things more organised. 9) To-do lists: This is probably one of the simplest but most effective out of this whole list, but making to-do lists can increase productivity 10 fold! Having a visualisation of the tasks you need to complete works wonders, and its damn satisfying when you can scribble something off your list! 10) Just do it: When you work from home it can be easy to put off the tasks you dont want to do (such a calling a difficult client or sorting out finances). If you get these out of the way at first, you can embrace your day without having anything hanging over your shoulders. Whats your best tip? Let us know in the comments!

Professional Resume Templates - Showing Off Your Best Skills and Experience

Professional Resume Templates - Showing Off Your Best Skills and ExperienceIn every office around the world, the first question many people ask when they get to a new company is 'What profession do you work in?' Every employer loves to hear that someone is a professional and knows their job, but what many of these people do not know is how many people have this professional misconception about employers. It is very important to know who you want to work for, and this is why this template or writing services were created.Every working person is aware that employers are looking for the best possible employees and one way to get that is to have them go through an employment evaluation. Many people, when interviewed during the evaluation period, tend to brag about their jobs, which are actually either a waste of time or are worse than any other jobs they have done. This can be seen as an unfair treatment of an employee, but the thing to remember is that employers are using these evaluati ons in order to determine whether they want to hire the person or not. It is very important to understand this when creating your resume. The second major problem that many people face when getting a new job is a feeling of hopelessness, and this can also be related to having a 'Do Not Want' resume. In this situation, they may have created a resume filled with past experiences that can never possibly bring anything relevant to their current position. In order to avoid this, many employers will hire those with more professional resumes, which have already demonstrated their skills and knowledge. It is very important to take advantage of this when creating your own resume. When a person starts a new profession, the same rules apply. If they do not know what it is or how to describe their new position in an appropriate manner, they will find themselves with very few options when it comes to hiring new employees. This means that they need to learn about the new industry in order to show t he employer what they are capable of.This is where the professional writer comes in and comes up with a professional resume for the new profession. This will be able to show employers exactly what the candidate has accomplished in the past that they are seeking to hire. In addition, the resume will contain any work experience the candidate has that is applicable to the job.One of the main reasons that this is important is because of the fact that the potential employer may not know much about the profession and may not know that the person has not shown that they know what they are doing. This is because many people who are looking for a new job will try to look at their resume as a complete package, showing everything that a potential employer would need to see. However, the thing to remember is that there is only so much information that a potential employer can see, and there is also a limit to how much a potential employer is willing to take.If a person were to show off all of t heir accomplishments, such as when they are hired, they might find that there are things on their resume that are shown in a completely different light and that make the potential employer more suspicious. A resume can be a very effective tool in your arsenal of getting a new job and it can help you land a job in the first place. It is important to know what your options are, and by using professional resume or writing services, you can help your chances. So if you are looking for a job, and if you want to get a good, professional job, then it is important to use the skills and experience that you have already got and to use your resume to get a good job. It is only through this that you will be able to truly succeed.

How to Stand Out From the Crowd While Job Searching

How to Stand Out From the Crowd While Job Searching Job searching can be difficult. Standing out among stacks of other applicants and actually landing an interview, that can be even more difficult. So, how do you get noticed, showcase your skills and show a company that you will be a good fit if they barely even glance at your resume?Page Kemnahad the right idea. After job searching for some time and not landing any leads, Page had the idea to showcase her talents in a unique way. After realizing that her resume wasn’t getting her anywhere, she decided to show companies what she could bring to the table.A person is so much more than what is on a resume. Everyone deserves more than a 20-30 second glance and it’s up to you to put yourself in the spotlight. Take an opportunity to show who you are, not what your resume says. Take the opportunity to stand out from the crowd.Make a Reputation for YourselfPage was able to express her talents by posting this video on LinkedIn. She was ambitious, set herself apart from her competition, and because of that, she was noticed. After only 3 days of sharing her video, she has over 140,000 views, 500 comments and 3500 likes on LinkedIn. She received messages from hiring managers at companies like Google, Cisco, Expedia, and many others. She made a reputation for herself on LinkedIn with just one video.Resumes and interviews are boring. They don’t give you the chance to show who you really are. Maybe you can tell someone that you are ambitious and creative. Perhaps you can even tell them what skills you bring to the table. But nothing speaks louder than actually showing what you have to offer; making a reputation for yourself and that is precisely what Page did.Go the Extra Mile“I will go the extra mile and show you that I’m worthwhile,” Page sang as she poured her heart out on LinkedIn in an effort to reach hiring managers. She did more than just fill out an application and submit her resume. She took the initiative and showed why she deserved the interview. She sho wed her ambition and talent and proved that she would be an asset to any company.Page used a unique technique to show her skills that you don’t see on a resume. She confirmed that she can think outside of the box. She put herself out there and showed courage, confidence, creativity, and brains. These are things that every company values.Ask YourselfWhen a company starts interviewing, they invite more than one candidate. You have the opportunity before and after the interview to make yourself memorable, in the right way. Ask yourself:Why am I the best fit for this role? How can I present my talents beyond my resume? What skills and talents do I have that will make an impact in this role? How can I make a positive reputation for myself?Asking yourself these questions will help you take the extra steps needed to present yourself as a more memorable, qualified, desirable and interested candidate. They will help you decide the best way for you to make an impression.Take RisksBottom lin e is, Page took a risk. She wasn’t the average job seeker. She saw a way to delineate herself from the crowd and stand out in a way that showed the best version of herself. In today’s highly competitive job market, you need to make an impression in order to win. Put yourself out there, take a risk and show those companies what you are made of.You know your talents, you know what you are capable of. Now it’s time to get out there and show others what you are capable of. Show them why they should hire you over other candidates. Don’t be the average typical job seeker. Make use of your talents and use them to become a memorable job seeker and soon enough, you will be recognized for your unique skills and abilities.

Its All Invented

It’s written by Benjamin Zander and Rosamund Stone Zander, who take turns talking about how they have helped people open up to possibility. Benjamin Zander is the conductor of the Boston Philharmonic, and has been since its formation in 1979. He frequently gives talks on leadership to groups of children and executives around the world. His wife Rosamund is a practicing family therapist who contributes her insights and patient stories to the narrative. The authors say “the objective of this book is to provide the reader the means to lift off from that world of struggle and sail into a vast universe of possibility.” We’re often limited by our own thinking, they say. Most of our struggles come from the way we perceive the situation â€" our framework of assumptions.   “Draw a different frame around the same set of circumstances and new pathways come into view,” they write. One of the guiding principles in the book is the fact that “It’s all Invented.” I’ve written about this idea before; what happens to us is neither positive nor negative â€" it just is what it is. It’s the story we tell ourselves about what happened that shapes our opinions and our emotions. In fact, Shakespeare wrote about it over 400 years ago: “There is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.” (Hamlet, Act 2.) The authors put it this way: “Indeed, all of life comes to us in narrative form; it’s a story we tell… a hypothesis, a construction of our own making.” In fact, they say, we don’t even see much of what happens around us. We only see what we’re programmed to see, and we only recognize what we have the mental map or reference point to recognize. In other words, we create a hypothesis as we travel through the world, and spend our time validating that hypothesis. If you believe the world to be a cold, cruel place, you’ll see plenty of evidence to confirm what you think. Another person could travel the same path as you and see a completely different picture. Einstein told Heisenberg in 1926 it was nonsense to found a theory on observable facts alone: “In reality the very opposite happens. It is theory which decides what we can observe.” The Zanders tell this story: “A shoe factory sends two marketing scouts to a region of Africa to study the prospects for expanding business. One sends back a telegram saying, SITUATION HOPELESS STOP NO ONE WEARS SHOES. The other writes back triumphantly, GLORIOUS BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY STOP THEY HAVE NO SHOES.” And they were both right. As you go through your day at the office, what stories are you choosing to tell yourself? Did your boss snap at you because he’s a jerk who doesn’t respect you? Or did he snap because he’s a good guy who’s under a lot of pressure to perform right now? The story you tell determines how you feel about a situation and how you react. When challenged, you’ll find all kinds of “evidence” to support your decisions and your actions. To open up to the possibility that you’ve made it all up is revolutionary â€" and frankly, terrifying. But once you get used to the idea, your life can change dramatically. The Zanders write: “It is these sorts of phenomena that we are referring to when we use the catchphrase for this chapter ‘it’s all invented.’ What we mean is, ‘It’s all invented anyway, so we might as well invent a story or a framework of meaning that enhances our quality of life and the life of those around us.’” From the book: “Every problem, every dilemma, every dead end we find ourselves facing in life, only appears unsolvable inside a particular frame or point of view. Enlarge the box, or create another frame around the data, and problems vanish, while new opportunities appear.” What if that were possible for you? What might change?
